That Certain Surrender
Kris Weinrich
This begins with weapons;
bladed glares and cocked questions
lowered, tucked away in those frayed openings of skin
that swell and sting alarm when a word
or a glance peels back our veneer.
Lips parted
open,
breathe,
let your hair down,
breathe,
let your
hair down
breathe.
Let those armor straps unlace,
feel space spread between metal plates,
let all that ire and iron
slide off your shoulders
and pile at your feet.
As blood and heat
spark memories in muscles,
you wonder how long it has been
since closed eyes,
forehead to forehead,
hands wandering blind along hip,
up back, across chest,
along neck, through hair
until thighs tense, backs
buck with grunt and
gasp giving way to moan
in a tangle of bed sheets
alight with dark fire
swallowed in warm
black waves of sleep.
