Boston Accent

I should have followed your eyes as they followed
the hem of my dress and known that this was not
an innocent, academic night. I should have remembered
that there were Thanksgiving leftovers in the fridge when
I toasted a Cinco De Mayo colored drink. I should have
stopped myself from leaning into your staccato heartbeat
as you saw the picture of a ghost from my past and
offhandedly said everything I wanted to hear. I should have
listened to the peanut gallery and their well-natured
concerns when you took my wool knees socks off, one at a time.
All the while, you should have remembered
you were old enough to know
that I was young enough to fall
heart first into the slippery charm of a Boston accent.
