Running The Statue of Liberty on Our 2020 Thanksgivings
after Johannes Goransson
To write a poem about turkeys
while turkeys are cooked is my scam
a November scam I do it
while drinking beer of Pilsner
out of a bottle
but I have to get rid of it
the bottle before the party starts
the party of no one else allowed
to enter this bubble you’ll need
a picture of yourself or a mirror
to stand in front of to prove you belong
with a Turkey feather in your mouth
To prove whose childhood this is
in my idiot arms I’m holding a pie
I’m reading the captions on the news
I’m carrying flowers for all the newly dead

Knew John Stickney and his poems in a previous life. Lucky you landed him. His wit grazed Cleveland and left its mark. Funny I was sifting through a swatch of his poems and said I wonder if he’s still writing. Glad he is. Hope he’s doing well.
