Welcome Home

You went by the old house today
You were alone
the weeds and the brush
all overgrown
There were flowers growing
A tribute
to the beautiful memories left behind
like petals
fragrant still in your mind
Standing in pieces
by broken windows
the fragmented trust of age is apparent
Time has gone somewhere you cannot follow
Days disappeared
To where
You’ll never know
Yesterday
will never know tomorrow

Somewhere inside this house
Love still resides
through the weathered paint
and dust upon the shelves
there is a promise hidden in these walls
so deep inside
where you spoke of love
innocence on the tip of our tongue
you fell from grace
in this empty space now dreams still echo
from a canyon deep in time
when you were so very young

You wandered so far from this front door
The smell of white lilacs on the breeze
Take you back now
On the mailbox
time has written these letters off for good
Yet this place
This feeling in your soul , in your bones
Is still the same
Things fade in time
Memories they never should

How many years ago
can you remember
Sweet tea on the back porch steeping
Your cat in the windows warmth sleeping
You close your eyes
as you stand inside every room
as it was back then
reliving the love
all the love you had ever known
through the broken glass
you hear the wind as it whispers
blowing the dust around like confetti
a parade of memories lingers on
a smile comes in ever so softly , ever so slowly
you hear the wind
as it whispers
welcome home
welcome home
