Haiku

Patiently waiting,
the yellow-crowned night heron
stalks prey in shallows.

the prickly pear she’d seen in
Pompeii, Italy,
not in the southwest desert,
nor the lands of Israel.

To Pethuel
Esecwiel Barud
What have you to do with me, Pethuel? and Tyre, Sidon, and Philistian coasts? You retaliate and leave me in hell. You sell my people to the Grecian hosts. You beat plowshares into swords, pruning hooks into spears, before the latter days come. Wickedness, evil, everywhere one looks. The day at hand yields a most vile kingdom. The Sun and Moon will grow dark. Multitudes reside in the valley of decision. The stars will diminish into solitude’s fields with an utter perfect precision. How, then shall it come to pass that mountains shall drip with wine, and flow in milk fountains?
Esecwiel Barud is a poet of prophesy. Pethuel, mentioned in the above prosem, was the father of Joel.

The Past
by Erisbawdle Cue
We of the present interpret the past,
much as we are directed by the past.
We cannot possibly escape the past,
nor could we eliminate all the past.
Nevertheless, we cannot live in the past.
We can’t possibly be judged by the past.,
nor could we ever find peace in the past.
It is the future we face, not the past.
Erisbawdle Cue is a poet of philosophic ruminations.

The Lesson in Anatomy of Doctor Tulp
by Sir Bac de Leeuw
One sees the lesson in anatomy of Doctor Tulp,
portraying flexors of th’ pale cadaver, with his pull,
to seven members of the surgeon’s guild of Amsterdam,
a complicated composition painted by Rembrandt.
In this group portrait are no tulips; the praelector stands;
the only man who wears a hat, the lecturer commands.
He demonstrates, while colleagues gaze, or stare, or peek askance,
the book De humani corporis… of Vesalius?
Nine figures are revealed within this mise-en-scène display,
a dominance of black and white, along with shades of gray.
So much excluded there, including the preparator….
Sir Bac de Leeuw is a poet of Dutch insights. Rembrandt (1606-1669) was a Dutch Golden Age painter.

Those in Assisted Living Care
by Dr. Weslie Ubeca
They seem like ghosts, those in assisted living care,
so pale and gray are they, so listless and feeble.
Physically and mentally broken, they are
faint shadows of their former selves, barely people.
But though they are weak and weary, they are alive.
Maybe they have very little energy left.
Maybe there is not much after which they still strive.
Maybe from friends and family they are bereft.
Still there is in them some traces of their greatness.
Still there is in them all the desire to live on.
Though they may speak with less force and abated breath,
they are, these souls, those closest to oblivion;
and hence, of all those inhabiting the planet,
they’ve been here the longest but won’t long stay on it.
Dr. Weslie Ubeca is a poet of medical issues, but is not an actual doctor.

Amarillo by Morning
by Bruc “Diesel” Awe
We got to Amarillo by morning,
but not without a dent in the windshield
that some semi spat up without warning,
while we were passing horses in a field.
We made Waco by sunset, red, revealed
in a shimmering and quivering berth,
each day a bright new birth of light, time sealed.
We had escaped the traffic at Fort Worth.
There the generally courteous dearth
of bad driving was changed for impatience.
Gone was the mood of merriment and mirth.
It was replaced by crazed, car invasions,
like bats out of hell, in all locations.
All I could do was make quick evasions.
Botts Dots
by Bruc “Diesel” Awe
Botts dots, reflective ceramic
tiles, keep roads lined, light up at night,
help us to where we’re arriving.
Botts dots, red, white, blue, or amber,
remind us to keep on the right
side of the road when we’re driving.
With Reasoned Zeal
by Bruc “Diesel” Awe
The images in life fly past fast. Fasten your
seat belt: the trip is quick, awkward, the traffic thick,
and you must be the driver and the passenger.
The problems are literally endless. The trick
is trying to keep up, at the same time you’re sink-
ing, moving forward, as you’re falling in a flick,
existence flickering through thoroughfares you think
are vanishing in the rewinding in the real.
And all one has to process all of this is ink,
while, at the same time, everything is a big deal;
and all one has, when the medium’s the messenger,
is facing median and way with reasoned zeal.
Bruc “Diesel” Awe is a poet of transportation. Elbert Dysart Botts (1893-1962) was a Modernist American engineer.

Autumnal Notes Typed Up
by Éclair Dub W. See
I.
November comes again, acute and clear,
and colder than the center of the year,
continuing October’s constant toil
of making trees release their leaves to soil,
returning Earth to a more barren show
by sending birds and beetles far below.
II.
The air is nippier, the winds more crisp,
more frequently is used the twisted wisp
to start the far more frequent fire’s flame.
The flowers’ stems and stalks are limp and lame.
The river, rushing faster, rises high.
A brighter hue of blue is in the sky
wherein the Sun moves through a lower arc.
The light of day seems far more faint and stark.
The nose turns pinker as do ears and cheeks.
The smells are scarcer, yet when nature speaks,
the sounds seem right, and more articulate,
as if they were somehow more accurate,
as if reality were made more real,
something that one would much more likely feel.
Éclair Dub W. See is a poet of weather and seasons.

The Batter Stepped Up to the Plate
by Rudi E. Welec, “Abs
There on the wide TV screen was the game.
The batter stepped up to the plate, swinging his bat.
The pitcher stood upon the mound. Then the ball came…
and was slammed all the way out into left field. Splat!
it lands in the man’s mitt, and he catches the fly.
The batter’s out. The game’s done. Here’s mud in your eye!
He Wanted
by Rudi E. Welec, “Abs”
He wanted to improve his joints, build up muscles too.
He wanted something very simple, easy to pursue.
He wanted to improve his mental clarity, and might.
He wanted calmness, and not to be hungry all the time.
He wanted lower risk of inflammation, a strong heart.
He wanted to improve digestion, and improve gut health.
He wanted to eliminate diseases—chronic ones.
He wanted to improve longevity beneath the Sun.
He wanted more control of life, that which he rarely had,
and wondered if becoming carnivore would make him glad.
Rudi E. Welec, “Abs”, is a poet of sports and health.
