What It Is To Be Lost

1.

A dark vortex
I see your life
sucked into
I have no way to bring you back

my poems are small flags
waving on a red hillside

We only know love
when we know
what it is to be lost

For Karen Hale – mother of Alyssa Ivy who died of a heroin overdose

I go to “rig hubs”
pull kids out
bring them to McDonald’s
buy them a burger

Every arm is
her arm every needle hers
On her bed at home

a Teddy Bear a paper rose
Heart stabbed I
keep wandering the streets

We only know love
when we know
what it is to be lost

3.
Philip Seymour Hoffman’s grieving mother Marilyn O’Connor
arrived in Manhattan…Mail Online, February 24, 2012

The addict’s mother is hidden
in the fine print

She is filled with lavender tears

She lies awake
all night

telephone cords
grow from her skin

No one will answer
