VAULT at Middlesex Lounge has an intention to bring Berlin to Boston, showcasing a mix of some of the best dance music you’ll hear, not limited to any one sound or genre, but a vibe: deep and dark. VAULT “will showcase local, regional, and international acts who fit this vibe, focusing not only on DJ sets, but live performance as well.” For VAULT, this is a journey immersed in sound and a visual experience.

VAULT Residents are Shuave and Byoosik. They welcome Boston’s DJ Bob Diesel on August 4.

Byoosik grew up listening to psychedelic rock, Radiohead, early/80s U2 records, orchestral music, jazz, Bossanova, Afrojazz and Afropop, Ragas and Taalas. She “heard proper techno and house for the first time” while exploring Berlin’s underground scene. “I will never forget the first time I walked into Berghain. My first techno influences (from two trips to Berghain). It was like stepping into another world, and all the things I was struggling with at the time were momentarily forgotten, losing myself in the music entirely.”

After this trip to Berlin, she decided she wanted to learn production and within a year, she was enrolled in the Music Production Course at Mmmmaven. She found it fascinating “that one person could create such complex, immersive sonic atmospheres.” She “had several moments in the Mmmmaven production course where I’d become overwhelmed by the possibilities of what I could accomplish with music production. It was like I finally unlocked music as a second language, one that I could not only read, hear and feel, but one that I could speak. That’s when the world changed.”

She graduated from the Music Production course full of inspiration but “found myself struggling to develop an intuition for what was danceable. I needed to listen more. I needed to interact with a crowd. That’s when I decided to take their DJ course. As soon as I hit the decks, I was hooked.” She has been a DJ for a year now and VAULT is her residency!

Byoosik is “excited to see how Diesel shatters the mold that many people have put him in as either a soulful house or a disco DJ. I’ve heard him do some crazy, dirty mixes with my techno records, and he’s been paying a lot of attention to newer techno producers from Germany and Eastern Europe. Of course, he’s got all the goodies up his sleeve from the Detroit masters. It’s going to be a good time for sure.”

VAULT’s co-resident, Shuave, found House and Dance Music by “staying up late listening to the radio” in Connecticut. “Video games like Frequency and Amplitude, the precursors to Guitar Hero, opened me up to more of the electronic music spectrum. I discovered and dove into Bemani music games from Japan, especially Beatmania and Pop’n Music. Those games showed me the endless possibilities in music and I started to find more and more on my own and through online forums. I found out about VirtualDJ and started there.”

“One of my friends (DJ Blu) brought me to the Municipal Cafe a.k.a the Muni nightclub towards the end of high school, and then years later brought me back out to some RAVE events in New England and NYC. I remember the amazing vibe of those events, and how the DJ seemed to lift everyone’s spirits freeing them to dance as they please. It was after my friends and I had hosted a RAVE at a factory that I was given a pair of belt drive turntables and a Gemini mixer with terrible fader bleed. Soon after I picked up a pair of Technics and a better mixer, then CDJs. Over time, from talking with locals and listening to mixes online, I came to understand how mixing between tunes allowed the DJ to tell a story and evoke emotion through proper track selection.”

Shuave has been a DJ and event organizer for 8 years and has hosted or DJ’ed as a guest at numerous events in New England. “The people I’ve met that I will remember and most likely be working with till the end of my time on this planet” are a part of the great experiences he contributes to dance culture. “We’re happy to host a living legend and it’s an honor to be playing the same night with a fellow DJ who has been practicing the craft for almost as long as I’ve been alive! I look forward to hearing DJ Bob Diesel’s selections for the night.”

DJ Bob Diesel has been a DJ for 38 years. “My parents were definitely a great inspiration and influence for music. They were great music appreciators and both listened to a wide variety of sounds and genres.” When Bob heard “The Chief Rocker” Frankie Crocker on WBLS FM in New York along with watching DJs play in public parks near his house, he decided he wanted to become a DJ himself.

He feels himself “blessed and fortunate to play in various venues and travel to many places to share my musical taste and passion. Making people happy and expressing my enjoyment in music. Byoosik heard me playing various genres one night and invited me to play VAULT.” He is looking forward to spinning at VAULT and sharing more than his rotation of Deep House, Disco and R&B Classics.

VAULT proclaims: “You are free to simply be yourself. Leave judgement behind. Lose your mind to the music.” You are invited to dance to the beat of different drums and experience the musical influences of Berlin and beyond as shared by your Resident DJs Byoosik, Shuave with Guest DJ Bob Diesel. This will be a Night to Remember!

Tuesday, August 4 at the Middlesex Lounge, 315 Massachusetts Avenue, Cambridge (Central Square). There is no dress code and this is a 21+ event. Doors open at 9:00 p.m. and the cover is $5 before 10:30 p.m. and $10 thereon. See you there!
