I am so excited to be on the Love is the Message Committee headed by Christopher Grant and Kai Grant, owners and curators of The Black Market in Dudley Square, Roxbury!

The Grants and Black Market are bringing to us all the Love is the Message House Music Conference, a 3-day affair celebrating Disco, Subcultures, Self-Expression, Personal Identity and HOUSE Music.

We hope you join us during one, any or all of these special, FIERCE events!! Here is a breakdown of each day and a personal message from the Grants!

Black Market and the LOVE IS THE MESSAGE Committee will be welcoming House Music industry authorities to Boston’s first ever House Music Conference, LOVE IS THE MESSAGE, on Friday, September 21; Saturday, September 22 and Sunday, September 23, 2018 at Black Market, 2136 Washington Street, Roxbury, Massachusetts.

The LOVE IS THE MESSAGE House Music Conference aims to teach the legacy of House Music and preserve this genre of Black musical genius, which is rooted in Disco, through the transference cultural information onto the next generation.

The opening night of Friday, September 21, 2018 will be dedicated to House Music’s Dance Culture and we are excited to announce that there will be a Vogue Dance contest – popularized by the LGBTQ Community in New York City’s 1980’s ball scene. Deep House, Club Classics and Chicago House will be spun from 9:00 p.m. until 2:00 am by DJ Mojavi and DJ Troy Anthony. The Vogue Contest will begin at 10:30 p.m. Ticket are here.

Day 2 of the conference will kick-off with the House Music Culture Movie, Maestro, which tells the story of how a group of people found refuge and a call for life outside the mainstream.

Following the film, Dance Music industry expert Arnett Burdette, along with Eric S. Drummond and DJ Troy Anthony, will lead a lunch-time discussion around The Genesis of House Music + Culture (pre-1986).

The second panel “The History of the House Music Scene in Boston: 1986 to the Present” + “The Future of House Music in Boston: The next generation” will be moderated by Liza Zayas (a renowned House Enthusiast and Lover of the Culture). Panelists include Boston’s House Music Founding Fathers, DJ’s, Dancers and Producers. The historic list includes Gwen McCoy, Courtney Grey (Founder + Promoter), DJ Bruno (DJ, Founder + Promoter), Dwayne Thompson (Loft Baby + Dancer), Kelvin Sylvester (DJ + Producer), and Leo Alarcon (DJ + Producer) amongst others.

The 3rd and final panel, moderated by Kai Grant, Fashion History Buff, will be led by distinguished fashion voices for both music and House culture, Ms. Jacqueline Myers, Visual Artist + Upcycler Cynthia “Samm” Bogues and Artist + Visual Artist + Image Maker, John Brewer.

House your Body is the final daytime activity of Day 2. Learn how to dance to House Music with Winter Music Conference Award Winning Dance Instructor turned DJ, Sammy Sueksagan.

Saturday night climaxes with our Uncolonized Afro House Party beginning at 9:00 p.m. and featuring DJ Bruno and DJ Savuth spinning the deepest, most soulful African AF House music directly from South Africa and beyond. Day 3 of LOVE IS THE MESSAGE concludes Boston’s first House Music Conference and features a full on Buffet-style Brunch from 11:00am until 12:30 p.m. catered by local restaurants Vegan Oasis and Fort Hill Jerk Chicken. Liza Zayas is a lover of writing and dancing and celebrates both as a singer and songwriter performing as Luna del Flor. You can hear her collaborative sounds and experience life through her storytelling. She invites you to dance.
