Dorchester Is For Lovers

Sometimes,
even in the morning rush,
there are seats on the red line train.
There is room to move a leg.
Maybe it is because
it is so cold today.

So cold you can see the gutters
of the triple deckers
shivering like children’s spines.
So cold the world outside
the train’s glass windows
is made of dried crystal sugar.

Maybe it is just that sort of Monday,
that no one wakes to see.

You were asleep when I left
Well, not asleep,
but laying down.,
blanket around your middle.

What you did after
I can’t say.
Shower? Breakfast? Work?

The roof of the Victorian
at the third stop on my train ride,
is covered in mirror grey ice.

I had to turn my neck so I could
keep seeing it
when the train
pulled away
from the platform.
