“Sophie” © Digby Beaumont
For Sophie
A plaintive call to me
the owl shrieks from a belltower
left standing after the bombings
nearly a century—
Or maybe it’s just sorrow
upon awakening
missing wet pavements
the gray skies—
Heat here
this country’s a walled-in hell
choking from traffic fumes—
Outstretched our hands meet
clutching through time’s
whirl and the century lost.
