poetry II
i had my blood drawn the other day,
and i saw ink mixed in with crimson liquid
i used to bleed platelets, plasmas, red & white blood cells,
but the doctor told me that now – I am bleeding poetry.
my only incisions are the breaks between stanzas,
I gush out in lines that form rhymes
couplets and sonnets, spit poems in showers
that only the drops on the walls will remember.
these deep blue words hiding in my veins
are turning bright red from the oxidization
from the liberation
from the realization
that these words have LISTEN written all over them.
no amount of bandages could ever stop them from flowing
because
you can’t duct tape the mouth of a volcano
to keep it from erupting.
our words touch people like lava
molten rocks in the form of metaphors settling
in between molars to keep their mouths from closing,
giving them a reason to be outspoken.
forget tornadoes, tidal waves, typhoons because poets
are the most beautiful natural disasters.
it’s hard to condense heartbreak into college-ruled sheets,
hurt into only 17 syllables, our feelings were never trained
to be haiku.
we walk on tightropes of our own thoughts,
but a pen in each hand keeps us balanced.
we slide phrases into the cylinder of our guns and look
into the barrel, hoping to find truth at the bottom.
but when we pull the trigger, there is no suicide.
there is only our souls in the form of 26 letters spilled out onto pages.
I had my blood drawn the other day
and i saw ink mixed in with crimson liquid
i used to bleed platelets, plasmas, red & white blood cells,
but the doctor told me that now,
I am bleeding poetry.
