“Take Heart” © Julie Marie Hoey

Shattered

they bowed their heads
in sadness
in prayer
heavy-hearted
hollowed and haloed
             as night fell
             midday

in the darkest of hours
stars were not shooting
they were bullets
             shrieking
             shredding
             shattering
tanks rolling
bombs dropping
people fleeing
             begging
             screaming
             dying

innocents kill innocents
while munition mongers
greedy generals
and perverted politicians
                   fill their coffers
                   feed their egos
                   and parade
                               their pathetic pride

sunflowers shattered before our eyes
