“Take Heart” © Julie Marie Hoey

they bowed their heads
in sadness
in prayer
hollowed and haloed
             as night fell

in the darkest of hours
stars were not shooting
they were bullets
tanks rolling
bombs dropping
people fleeing

innocents kill innocents
while munition mongers
greedy generals
and perverted politicians
                   fill their coffers
                   feed their egos
                   and parade
                               their pathetic pride

sunflowers shattered before our eyes
