American Titerature

One does not simply
walk into the Food Lion
without girded breasts.
Vulgar, obscene, shocking,
going without a brassiere
is a risk that I am sometimes
willing to take.
I’ll have you know, that I hold
a master’s degree in American Titerature,
as well as a Ph.D. in letting
it all hang free.
My breasts swing and sway
with each step through the produce
aisle, appraising melons and clementines
with a smirk on my face.
Put those things away!
Mildred proclaims
over the shriveled overly ripe
avocados and low hanging fruit.

Emily Hawkins holds a masters degree from Southern New Hampshire University in Creative Writing. When she is not writing, she can be found in her music room playing one of her many instruments, spending time with her partner of 9 years, or playing with her dog, Oreo. She currently resides in the mountains of Southwest Virginia.

Edward S. Gault is a poet and fine art photographer. He lives at Mosaic Commons, a co-housing community in Berlin, Massachusetts.
