U Tragic, Melancholy Beauty

You saw what was & how
it should be.

When color didn’t work
and black left
                     a mark
each day meant resurrection.

Nights, full of revelation.
Mornings, full of erasure.

The image was always on the verge.
Your brush, still wet
        now
                             dropping
from your hand

across a slate of grays
where you shiver alone.

Oh, how slowly you burn.
