Too Late

Burdened ‘neath the weight of things left unsaid,
of questions left unasked,
now that it’s too late, I thank you every day,
and recall your gentle wisdom with gratitude.

I would pay more to hear your voice
and your laughter than for any other sound I can imagine.

I would gladly sacrifice what little hair I have left
to return to the days when I could sit in your lap
in your fake-leather recliner combing your thinning hair,
its oily scent still with me today.

I am grateful for the final years, as roommates and friends.
I am grateful for the early years of riding on your shoulders.
I am grateful for the years between,
even those I did not value at the time.

Now that it’s too late,
I wanted you to know.
