Shared interests:
shopping, boys,

politics, boys,
siblings, boys.

We appreciated
Moms Mabley jokes,

danced to the music
of our time,

shared secrets,
compared dating stories.

It was the time of
big Afros, short skirts,

bell bottoms
and wild paisleys.

People marched
for Civil Rights.

We applauded Malcom,
Martin, and Rosa.

We listened to our hearts,
fought for our dreams,

and encouraged
each other.

That’s what
best friends do.
