The E.A.R.: The Farce on LA

The Grammys are a joke.

I shouldn’t be surprised by the win for Best Rap Album after all these years, yet I’m surprised.

Best Rap Album needs to be judged on the merits of both production, and lyricism. Best Rap Album should not be a damn popularity contest.

You can’t just give out awards to people simply because people like their personality, or they make a catchy hit.

With that being said, Cardi B isn’t a bad person, but compared to the other albums in the category, her music pales in comparison. Pusha T’a “Daytona” is a masterpiece that I listen to on repeat. Mac Miller’s “Swimming” was unfortunately what we here like to call a swan song, and it did a damn good job of it.

I haven’t heard Victory Lap or Astroworld, but I’m sure those two sound worlds better than Cardi’s album. Cardi’s album doesn’t deserve to be up there. There are SUBSTANTIALLY better female rappers than Cardi B. People who rely squarely on Top 40 to tell them what music is hot don’t know who Rapsody, and Jean Grae are.

Cardi B, and several others are the symptom of a problem in music where a catchy whimsical personality can compensate for lackluster music. Cardi B is a good person, and an okay artist, but her album didn’t deserve to win that award.

Stay classy…
