Birches and Late Autumn Clouds
Soon the snow-driven clouds will come here,
Prairie grass, already brown, will turn a brilliant white
like goose feathers in pillows,
And heroes of our time will emerge from woods,
mountains and cities to confront the chilling era,
But I will stand before the white birches,
thinking how the evening and dawn are but a moment,
knowing it is but a small wonder to be alive.
