A Fan Letter
Dear Laura Gilpin:
I thought you’d like to know
that I checked out a book of your poems,
the one that won the Whitman Prize,
from my public library.
You wrote wonderful poems. The one
about the calf with two heads was my favorite.
I read that one over and over again.
My library, which was in a very small town,
still did things the old fashioned way
of stamping the due date on a slip of paper
glued to the inside cover of their books.
I was only the fifth person to read your book
since it was published in 1977.
Little wonder that you searched for and found
another way to live a life of healing,
another way to look into the universe and find
twice the usual number of stars.
