safireDJ SAFIRE

DJ Safire grew up dancing and playing records in her grandparents’ basement. Her parents had a lot of 45s of 50’s music like Motown, Little Richard, Fats Domino, James Brown and The Temptations. Truth be told, she was buying a lot of disco, Stevie Wonder, Donna Summer, and others at 4 and 5 years old. “Back then 45s were like 25 cents!” Michael Jackson’s Off The Wall, though, “changed everything.”

Flash forward to the 80’s where Safire was “super into Michael Jackson and a lot of dance classics. As a teenager in the early 90’s I got really into hip hop. EPMD, Pete Rock & CL Smooth, Slick Rick, etc. When A Tribe Called Quest dropped The Low End Theory it was over!! That changed my life!”

For Safire, early 90’s hip hop made her want to become a DJ. Working as a waitress at nightclub Benny’s City Limits, its resident, DJ Keith Wells, was Safire’s first experience listening to a DJ mixing, scratching and “rocking the party all night.” “I was so fascinated and mesmerized watching and listening to the music. I knew right then and there that I absolutely had to do this.”

As a DJ, Safire tries to keep a fundamental element to the craft alive, creating a vibe. “A lot of DJs just play songs but there’s a vibe that the DJ creates that brings people on a journey that has different plateaus of anticipation and climaxes within the songs. As a patron I tend to seek that when I go out to see different DJs.”

With their love for the art of DJing along with the music they select and play, DJs Dende, Mystina and Safire are sure to share an amazing soundscape to the galactic formation dancers of all steps design. In Sync.

Join Us this Saturday, August 15th at the Cantab Lounge’s Club Bohemia, 738 Massachusetts Avenue, Cambridge as ERATO welcomes DJ Safire alongside residents T.C.C.! PostScript! Stay tuned for future ERATO news!!! We Promise 🙂

Until Saturday Night!
