Stone Soup Poetry meets from 8-10 p.m. every Monday at the Out of The Blue Art Gallery at 106 Prospect Street with an open mike sign-up at 7:30 p.m.

This week, we put the spotlight on David R. Surette, who is reading on October 28th.    An English teacher and varsity hockey coach at East Bridgewater High School, he celebrates the release of his fourth book, Wicked Hard.  All his books are available from Koenisha Publications.  The poem below is an excerpt from the book.

With my own cash, I bought
Carrie Anne and Windy.
I was ten, in love with girls’ names.

At Mary-Ann’s 12th birthday party in Edgeworth,
I danced the fast songs with her,
already in when someone spun
Moon Shadow and then Hey Jude.
I held her all the way through the Na, na na na’s.

I kept two Kennedy half dollars
in my top bureau drawer.
They were holy like
a saint’s medal or scapular.
I committed to spend that dollar
on her at Buttricks’ Ice Cream.

She said no, didn’t hear harmonies in her head
when she heard my name.
I remembered the ice cream stand
stood all the way in Medford
near the Flynn Rink.
I was four years away from driving,
punching in ‘RKO and ‘MEX,
playing the pop songs of love
as I drove someone, but not her, towards sweetness.
