Transition Relationship
We’re sunning ourselves pink
as they bob on an emerald wave.
How would I know they are running
through a checklist of risks, sidetracked
as I am by rogue joy, by sheer beauty
next to me, as I look to move myself
from grief’s shadow. I admit, there’s
a phrase for it: transition relationship.
This half-committed muddling ritual,
the painful peel after the burn.
Richard L. Matta grew up in New York’s rustic Hudson Valley, moved around the country as a forensic scientist, and landed in San Diego. He’s frequently on or near the water, usually with his golden-doodle dog. He’s been published in many international haiku journals, and his long-form poems are in such places as Dewdrop, Healing Muse, New Verse News, and San Pedro River Review.
