Suburbanites

A suburb on a gray day
and faces at windows
seem drawn with a graphite pencil –

a bedroom community
where low clouds
get the feeling exactly –

features forced into exile,
the people and the houses stay behind,
undifferentiated by the gloom –

it begins to rain
in a place where
was promised
permanent sunshine –

everyone’s disappointed –
just ask anyone.
