The E.A.R.: Child’s Play

There’s a trend that I have been wanting to say my piece on for a while. It’s a trend that seems to be a thing every single year. With NBA 2K19, The Destiny 2 expansion Forsaken, God of War, and Spiderman out, and games like Assassins Creed Odyssey, Call of Duty, and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate in the pipeline, this is that time of year guys stay glued to their TVs. It’s also the time of year they go missing, and their girlfriends put their faces on milk cartons. It’s also that time of year where we get to see an onslaught of Youtube videos that involve angry neglected girlfriends destroying their boyfriend’s gaming consoles, or deleting saves and characters. I would like to rant about the latter, and say my piece to BOTH genders.

To The Ladies

I understand your frustrations, and it sucks that of all the time they devote to their games, they don’t give some of that time to you. I will give the guy perspective on this matter. Video games are mad expensive. Back in the PlayStation days, we were only spending $40-50 on games. With the PS3, they jacked the prices to $60. $60 is a lot of money. For some, that’s like two weeks worth of gas depending on both the car and the commute. The time poured into these games is about getting a return on our investments.

The games have gotten bigger, and more immersive. Back in the Sega and Nintendo days, a game could be completed in 20-50 minutes with some larger games like JRPGs requiring more time. Games nowadays require at least 40-60 hours to complete the main games with 100-300 hours to do everything else. It is a massive time sink, and it’s easy to get lost. It doesn’t mean they don’t care.

At no point has a guy ever said, or will ever say “I don’t want you hanging out with me while I play this”. Come thru, ask questions, spend time with him. As my wise cousin told me over the summer, “At least he’s home, and not in another woman’s vagina”. He ain’t cheating, he ain’t gang banging, he ain’t selling drugs. If he deliberately decides to push you away because of a game and refuses to spend any time with you, then there is probably a bigger problem than the fact he loves video games. If a guy frustrates you enough to the point that you’re destroying his shit, then he’s probably not worth that stress, and you probably shouldn’t be seeing him.

To The Men

Y’all aren’t off the hook. Your relationships aren’t like the Career mode in 2K19. They’re more like an online match. There ain’t no pause button. Your relationships don’t take a break just because you’re trying to max out your characters.

Relationships, much like those games, are a time investment. You don’t have to spend EVERY waking moment with your significant other, but at least let them know you’re thinking of them. Send a text, take about 10-20 minutes to give them a call. Maybe drop the game one night and surprise her. Designate a day or two during the week where you spend time with just her. Invite her over if it’s a co-op game, then let her be your player two.

Relationships are an investment, and if you don’t want to devote time to your lady, then you probably shouldn’t be in a relationship. If you’re with a woman who constantly demands you spend time with her, and the time you give her never seems to be enough despite your best efforts, you may have a bigger problem on your hands. If she refuses to give you your space, and she gets angry enough to destroy your stuff despite your best efforts, then maybe it’s time to move on.

Winter is coming, and we’re gonna need to stick together. We’re too old act like children. Let’s agree to behave like adults, solve our problems like adults, and never forget to act like children once in a while within reason.

Stay Classy…
