The E.A.R.: Ye The People

Unpopular Opinion: Kanye actually put out a pretty solid album, it’s a shame a lot of people won’t listen to it because of his views/genius marketing ploy.

For those who have been living under a rock, Kanye has touted some pretty controversial lines over the course of the month pertaining to slavery and its origins. I just wanna remind y’all that a person is entitled to their views, regardless of how unpopular they are. You also need to realize that Kanye’s new marketing tactic works because they are so many people trending #boycottkanye on twitter. Kanye quietly released his album without so much as a peep, but people who aren’t riled up by Kanye’s comments will flock towards it because they see it trending.

You may think you’re doing a great thing by publicly voicing outrage for Kanye and that’s fine, but just know you are achieving the opposite. For every person that chooses to complain about an album, a million others will give it a listen to see what the fuss is.

Kanye may be a mental wreck, but he hasn’t lost his genius. Kanye has studied social media and has weaponized it to put himself at the top. Regardless of his views, I think it’s pretty genius. He took everything wrong with social media and the media in general, and made it work in his favor. My only beef with his album is like the Pusha T album, it’s too short. There’s nothing wrong with the 10-13 track albums of the day because they give time for the product to sizzle, and really cook. This album is like putting a really good cut of meat on the grill, and right when it starts to smell good, you take it off.

This would’ve worked better as an EP, but not an album. Overall I think it’s a solid effort that many will miss out on, but will continue to trend because that’s how social media works. Some of the standout tracks in my opinion are “Yikes”, “Wouldn’t Leave”, and “Violent Crimes”. I’d give this one an 8/10. I’m hoping to get more of my Kanye fill when he drops his collab project with Kid Cudi.

Stay classy…
