The E.A.R.: #therootoftheproblem


 

I’ve been following this Starbucks fiasco, and before y’all decide to hop on the #boycottstarbucks wave, you need to hear me out.

This ain’t a Starbucks problem; I know because I am an avid Starbucks goer and have been for a very long time. I’ve done exactly what those two black men were doing (just sitting in there for a long period of time without ordering anything) for years.

I’m an avid blogger/writter and can’t stand to do any work of that nature at home due to the myriad of distractions in my home environment. Starbucks is also a great place for me to kill time while I’m in the city. Sometimes I do buy things, sometimes I don’t.

The times I haven’t bought anything have never been anything out of the ordinary. I have spent upwards 5-7 hours in a Starbucks just doing work, or killing time with a book, or a handled game. I have sometimes walked in there with other people just to chill without ever buying anything.

I’ve had employees give me the bathroom code at some locations even when I didn’t make a purchase. I have even brought outside food and drink to Starbucks on several occasions at numerous locations and have never gotten shit for it. Starbucks has always and will always be a pretty dope place to chill/indulge in my Pumpkin Spice Latte addiction.

All of this is why I find it very difficult to blame this problem on the entire company like some are doing. This isn’t a Starbucks problem, it is the symptom of a problem that has plagued this country for years, a problem we have been turning a blind eye to.

This sort of profiling/prejudice isn’t limited to Starbucks, and throwing the social justice hammer at one organization won’t entirely solve the real problem at hand, that problem being that people will always walk into any situation with the prejudices that they were brought up with.

This employee could’ve been employed anywhere else and would’ve done the same exact thing to another group of minorities because that prejudice will ALWAYS be there. I’m glad the Starbucks CEO has made an active effort to curb this problem, but we shouldn’t only focus on Starbucks. If our only focus is what happened at Starbucks, we miss the bigger picture of why this happened in the first place.
