Stone Soup Servings Presents: Gordon Marshall

Stone Soup Servings is a regular series for Oddball Magazine that features upcoming performers at Stone Soup Poetry, the long-running spoken word venue in the Boston area that has partnered with Oddball Magazine. Stone Soup Poetry now meets from 7-9 p.m. every Monday at the Out of The Blue Art Gallery at 541 Massachusetts Avenue in Central Square Cambridge, Massachusetts. The open mike sign-up at 6:30 p.m.

On September 19, we will announce a new winner of the Jack Powers Stone Soup Savor Poetry Prize. And Gordon Marshall, the prize’s founder, will be on hand once again to help present it. The poem below is just a small sampling of the goodness we’ll be offering next Monday.

The Steeples Rise

The steeples of the old North End
Rising amidst the grocers and the shops
The changing face
Of an Italian neighborhood
The churches antique and classic
The slick storefronts
On the funky brick
The parks where all the old gents
Used to speak Italian
Now young couples
With their children and dogs
It’s a kind of kaleidoscope
Of time
Most beautiful
In its passage
The memories of the changes
The changing cultures
On one temporal plane
It’s a colorful history
One thing laid Upon another
Just like Rome
And the steeples rise
On the classic churches
