Two Poems by Nate Connors

When Writers Disappear

When inspiration strikes you
better not be
in the crapper or out
to lunch unless by lunch
you mean vegetarian
in a meaty park where a player
with invisible hands
tickles ivory tourists
that have lived
here for years fighting
strong in Boston
tanks and tees and what
is this? A dachsund
with an eating disorder
humps this leg
to an empty chair
that may as well be
company so come
to think of it
I don’t give a crap
this tune off
key the dog the chair
have run off who knows
where the war
never ends leaving me
vegetarian thoughts and
a carnivorous
feeling I am
in a staycation
selfie where kissing
cousins question
whatever
became
of him?

Oh, hello

Care to have some tea? A mermaid brewed it
in between storms. If not for the sea
sickness she might have stayed but
what can you do? I have a deck of cards but
the face cards jumped ship and the joker
is bent out of shape. Would you like to hear me
play my harmonica? I know a song a seabird
taught me on dry land. Yes, I think I think I see
two sharks swimming to greet us. I would offer
my hand but it has already been taken
