The Underground Garden: Erato (The Timmy Allen Zone)

He’s back!!! Who be he? He be Boston pioneer in art, graffiti and DJ culture, Timmy Allen, and we are honored, pleased and excited to host him at ERATO this Saturday, February 20 at Club Bohemia in Cambridge! 12642908_10153952086450844_7318039416611645411_n

Timmy is summa cum laude in graffiti tagging as ZONE, a pioneer of the Boston graffiti scene, as well as a founding member of the A.L.A. (Afro-Latino Alliance) Crew. “I wanted to unite all the black and brown writers and take our hoods back.” And represent their hoods they have. The A.L.A.’s mural, From Pyramids to Projects, was included in a national mural project and accompanying book  and was also celebrated in Cambridge . Other A.L.A. works have been featured at the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, the Museum of Fine Arts, the Boston Public Library and the Smithsonian in D.C. To this day, A.L.A. members are still commissioned by the City of Boston for original artwork and murals!

Timmy’s individual art itself is a force. Multimedia uses of oils, paints, spray cans, and collages become intense showings of life as a Cape Verdean male in America, turns a mirror to America’s racial history and honors his African roots. Intelligent and striking as an artist, soulful and guided as a DJ, Timmy Allen is a prolific artist whose work echoes in the City of Boston and its current spaces for House Music and art.

His legacy as a DJ began at Club M80, in the 80’s, where he was known for playing “club classics.” During his residency at another party, Visions, he was invited to play a guest set at the legendary Soul Revival party, a Boston-based event noted by both Urb Magazine and Rolling Stone as one of the best parties in America, which was promoted, hosted and designed by Boston activist Courtney Grey / Zumbi. Some time after this guest set, Timmy became Soul’s resident and had a “vision of uniting the old school generation of Househeads with the newer heads (a/k/a the “Loft heads”)” by playing a wide spectrum of dance classics and at the moment House music. Timmy’s soulful serenades for the Revivers is the stuff dreams are made of and the work of these two gentlemen for this era in Boston House Music will forever live on.

M80 and Soul Revival were two of many residencies Timmy held down. He also rocked the legendary (it’s impossible to overuse this word because it’s true in these cases!) Mercury at the Milky Way in Jamaica Plain every Wednesday night. Another event curated by Courtney Grey, Mercury was an open mic night hosted and promoted by DJ Nomadik of Soulkore Productions which would morph into a serious dance party, FOR YEARS. You must understand the legit party a place must be to rock for years in the middle of the week. We did and we live in love to tell about it. Maestro and Brother are not exaggerations in Timmy’s case.

Through art and music, Timmy Allen delivers messages of love, hope and strength and we are looking forward to his DJ return back home alongside ERATO Residents T.C.C. , the Boston DJ Duo always keeping spirits high and bodies jumping (https://soundcloud.com/djmystina)! This ERATO is more than a party; it is a reunion and, as always, everyone is family and invited!
